Ounces, Pounds,and Tons..Oh My!
Hooray! There are only three units that you need to know for standard weight conversions. We will work an example of each operation for ounces, pounds, and tons. If you need a more detailed explanation of the steps, start back on standard capacity conversion page and work your way through back to this page. Each standard conversion is worked the same way so we don’t want to bore you with the same information on each page, but you can never have too many examples, right?
Addition
Ned works at an elephant sanctuary. Part of his job is weighing the elephants. Today, he weighed Shirley, Patz, and Zelda. They weighed 2 tons 1,000 pounds, 1800 pounds, and 3 tons 500 pounds respectively. What is their combined weight?
Subtraction
What is the weight difference between Shirley and Zelda?
Multiplication
Kayla also works at the elephant sanctuary. She is in charge of making sure they have enough food on-hand. Each elephant eats an average of 300 pounds of food daily. There are ten elephants total. How much food does the sanctuary provide each day? Convert to tons.
Division
The sanctuary was donated 22 tons of bedding to be delivered as needed. If the bedding was distributed evenly among each of the ten elephants, approximately how much bedding would each elephant receive?
