Mean

What Does Mean Mean in Statistics?

The mean is another word for average. If you know how to find the average of something, then you already know how to find the mean! To find the average (mean) of a data set, you add the numbers together, then you divide by that sum by the count of data.

A common example is test results. If you made a 92, 88, and 76 on your last three tests, the mean would be 85.3 for the test results. We get that answer by summing 92, 88, and 76. The sum is 256. Since we have three test scores, we divide that sum by 3. By dividing 256 by 3, we get 85.3 as the mean.

Find the Mean on Liesel’s Survey

Liesel’s survey would hypothetically involve many participants because a survey needs a large sample to be successful so we will pull a sample of the sample so to speak.

Of the participants, six answered that all $50,000 should be given to the after-school program. The ages of the six people are: 47, 59, 32, 55, 19, and 34. What is the mean of survey participants that wants $50,000 donated?
